However, individual circumstances are beginning to impact our practice as a whole: When an appointment is canceled, the doctor who held that time for you has already stepped away from their hospital work, which they cannot get back. Our doctors choose to work with KYMMC because they believe in what we’re doing for the community, even though they earn much less here compared to working an extra shift at the hospital. But if scheduling issues persist, it becomes harder to keep them on board. If a provider offers telehealth for your first certification appointment, that’s a red flag that they are not operating legally, and your certification could be invalid. Since January 1, 2023, Kentucky physicians have been able to provide patients with qualifying medical conditions with a temporary certification letter allowing for the possession of medical cannabis purchased from dispensaries outside of Kentucky. These temporary certification letters will remain valid until the full medical cannabis program begins on January 1, 2025. On December 1, 2024, the Kentucky Office of Medical Cannabis will start accepting annual certifications from medical cannabis practitioners for the official medical cannabis program. If you book an appointment with us before then, we’ll submit your information to the state on this date. If you book an appointment with us after December 1, 2024, we’ll submit your certification within twenty-four (24) hours of your appointment. On January 1, 2025, the Kentucky Office of Medical Cannabis's online portal (kymedcan.ky.gov) opens for patients to accept our recommendations. After a brief background check, the Office of Medical Cannabis will then issue the annual card via email.
